For Rachel Malec, the journey with NeuroKids began with her son’s life-saving surgery under the care of Dr. Ben Warf. What started as a personal experience quickly became a mission to ensure other children—both in the U.S. and around the world—receive the same chance at life. In this heartfelt Q&A, Rachel shares what inspired her family’s ongoing support for NeuroKids, the deep gratitude she holds for her son’s quality of life, and why she believes this work is transforming the future for children everywhere.
How did you first learn about NeuroKids?
My son is a patient of Dr. Warf.
What initially inspired you to support NeuroKids?
Everyday I look at my son and am so thankful for his successful surgery but in that same moment I’m saddened that so many other children are suffering from hydrocephalus around the world without the same outcome, including right here in the US. Some will face a lifetime of repetitive brain surgeries, preventable physical and mental disabilities and some that will be left to die. I feel a sense of urgency to help others get the same chance my son has. Supporting NeuroKids aligns with giving all children a chance at a life hydrocephalus would have otherwise taken.

What keeps you connected and engaged with our mission?
The amount of children being helped through Neurokids is why we prioritize staying connected to NeuroKids. With each neurosurgical training more and more children will receive the access to care they deserve. NeuroKids impact is truly limitless.
Is there a specific moment, story, or experience that stands out to you in your journey as a donor?
Everyday that I get to see my son be the boy he was meant to be I think of Dr. Warf. Roman excels academically, he enjoys many sports like snowboarding, gymnastics and rock climbing. He is an adventure and thrill seeker. He is so proud of his accomplishments and loves living the life he was given. I will be forever thankful that Dr. Warf gave us this gift of quality of life. NeuroKids hosting a training in FL giving this gift to American children as well. Two US trained neurosurgeons we saw before consulting Dr. Warf all recommending shunting.

What would you say to others who are considering supporting NeuroKids?
As a donor I am so proud of how far our funding impact reaches. To be able to say I am helping children across the world is truly powerful. To be able to be apart of something that is truly changing the world is an honor. It is not just funding a one time cause. The dollars donated will live on through the physicians trained and each child that is touched. Your funding contributes to children’s lives not only saved but allowing them to live the life they were meant to.
