Brazil
While strides have been made in recent years to improve healthcare access and reduce infant mortality rates in Brazil, disparities persist. Hydrocephalus presents a particularly daunting challenge for children and families across the country, as Brazil has some of the highest incidence rates globally. For families already grappling with economic hardship and social marginalization, the burden of hydrocephalus compounds existing challenges, placing immense emotional and financial strain on caregivers.
NeuroKids initiated its partnership with Dr. Giselle Coelho and the Santa Casa de Misericordia de São Paulo Central Hospital in São Paulo in 2022. Dr. Coelho identified the urgent need for enhanced surgical intervention and approached us. Dr. Coelho is deeply committed to improving the lives of her young patients and their families and is enthusiastic about advancing the mission of NeuroKids.
Since collaborating with Dr. Coelho, interest in our work has significantly increased across Brazil. Alongside our partner site in São Paulo, Dr. Coelho and NeuroKids have facilitated the training of additional neurosurgeons in Amazonia Belém and Belo Horizonte. Currently, three surgeons have been trained by NeuroKids in the ETV/CPC method, and they are actively training their peers, showcasing the efficacy of our approach.
