A co-founder of NeuroKids, Dr. Michael Dewan is dedicated to helping train the next generation of neurosurgeons in low-resourced settings.
Dr. Dewan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at Vanderbilt, where he is also the surgical director of the Pediatric Neuro-Oncology and Pediatric Neuro-Vascular Programs and academic director of the Global Neurosurgery Program. Dr. Dewan has been conducting education and research activities in East Africa since 2005. Over the years, he has helped train more than a dozen neurosurgeons in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia.
After attending Notre Dame for his undergraduate education, Dr. Dewan earned his MD from Yale School of Medicine and completed his residency in Neurological Surgery at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He served as the 2016 Paul Farmer Global Neurosurgery Fellow at the Program in Global Surgery and Social Change at Harvard Medical School and as a Pediatric Neurosurgery Chief Fellow at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.
While his passion is patient care and neurosurgical education, he conducts research that advances the field of neurosurgery at home and abroad. He has published extensively in the arenas of global neurosurgery, worldwide neurosurgical burden of disease, and neurosurgical training and education for neurosurgeons in LMIC.
