Myanmar
After many years of civil war, Myanmar’s healthcare system faces significant challenges, which are further compounded by decades of underfunding, conflict, and political instability. Health services are unevenly distributed, with access to healthcare much more difficult in rural areas. Furthermore, Myanmar has a high infant mortality rate, with over 40 deaths per 1,000 live births, and while this number has improved from previous decades, it remains a critical public health issue.
For conditions such as hydrocephalus and spina bifida, the healthcare system’s ability to diagnose and manage these disorders are extremely limited, particularly in rural and conflict-affected regions. Such limitations subsequently put children at risk for serious developmental and neurologic deficits when they cannot receive timely and appropriate neurologic care.
In Myanmar, Dr. Aung Aung Kyaw has provided the innovative Warf procedure since 2019. In 2024, NeuroKids started supporting Dr. Aung, positioning him as an expert trainer for other pediatric neurosurgeons. By advocating for resources, empowering healthcare providers, and fostering community support networks, NeuroKids is bringing hope for better outcomes for children affected by hydrocephalus in Myanmar.

Dr. Aung Aung Kyaw
ASSOCIATE NEUROSURGEON AT YANGON GENERAL HOSPITAL
Dr. Aung Aung Kyaw is a remarkable individual with a wealth of experience and dedication to his field. It’s truly commendable that he has dedicated his career to treating complex conditions such as hydrocephalus and spina bifida in children. His journey from earning an MBBS from the University of Medicine in Yangon to completing his residency training at Yangon General Hospital, and now serving as a Consultant Neurosurgeon is inspiring.
From an early age, he was determined to be a good doctor. The world of medicine, and the human brain in particular, fascinated him. He was drawn to the challenge of understanding and treating the brain, and this solidified his decision to pursue a career as a neurosurgeon.
In 2019, he traveled to Uganda for hands-on training in the Warf procedure. That experience deepened his commitment to providing specialized care for children with hydrocephalus and spina bifida.
