Egypt
While Egypt is one of the most developed nations in Africa, with a population exceeding 110 million, access to specialized surgical care remains limited, particularly for children with hydrocephalus. Upon initiating our partnership in Egypt in 2022, the predominant treatment for hydrocephalus cases was shunt placement, yet, treatment remained inaccessible to many. With an estimated 7,500 to 11,000 babies affected by hydrocephalus and spina bifida annually, the lives of thousands of children were affected each year.
Our collaboration began with Dr. Assem Abdel Latif and Dr. Osama Aglan at Ain Shams University in Cairo, which became our first NeuroKids training site. Our training focused on the Warf (ETV/CPC) procedure, with the overarching goal of reducing the burden of shunt dependence in affected children. Since then, we worked together with Dr. Abdel Latif and Dr. Aglan to pioneer our remote presence training model, ensuring continuous mentorship and support to deliver quality neurosurgical care to all families in need.
In addition to our training, Karl Storz installed the endoscopic equipment and trained the team on its use and maintenance, and Ohana One provided the remote presence technology we used to mentor neurosurgeons at Ain Shams.
Today, with two trained partners on the ground, we envision the establishment of multiple centers capable of addressing the neurosurgical requirements of over 41 million Egyptian children.
