We’re proud to introduce one of NeuroKids’ newest partner, Dr. Aung Aung Kyaw, a dedicated neurosurgeon in Myanmar whose passion and precision are changing lives. In this Q&A, Dr. Aung shares how his journey into neurosurgery began, how he connected with NeuroKids, and the transformative impact our partnership is having on children with hydrocephalus and spina bifida in Myanmar.
What inspired you to pursue a career in neurosurgery?
From an early age, I was determined to become a good doctor. The world of medicine fascinated me, and as I advanced in my studies, I found myself drawn to surgery. The intricacies of the human body and the precision required in surgical procedures captivated me. But it was the brain that truly captured my interest. I realized that the brain is the control center of the entire body—complex, essential, and deeply mysterious. The challenge of understanding and treating such a vital organ solidified my decision to specialize in neurosurgery.
How did your connection with NeuroKids begin?
In 2019, I met NeuroKids Senior Program Advisor Charles Howard, and that moment became a turning point in my career. Through him, I was introduced to the mission of NeuroKids and saw an incredible opportunity to help children suffering from neurological conditions, particularly Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida. To better serve these children, I traveled to Uganda for advanced hands-on training in Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy (ETV) and Choroid Plexus Cauterization (CPC). Using a fiber optic flexible neuro endoscope, I learned techniques that have since become vital to my practice and have greatly improved the care we provide in Myanmar.

Do any patient cases stand out to you?
Absolutely. Every case is unique, but let me tell you about Min Htet, a 4-year-old boy who came to us with serious symptoms—recent blindness, severe headaches, and projectile vomiting. After evaluation, we discovered he had hydrocephalus caused by a pineal region tumor. We performed an ETV to relieve the pressure on his brain, and the results were incredible. He regained his sight, his headaches stopped, and the vomiting subsided. Seeing his transformation was a deeply moving experience for me and his family.
Every child we help leaves a mark on me. From the first moments after surgery when a child opens their eyes without pain, to the joy on their parents’ faces—these moments remind me why I chose this path.
How has the partnership with NeuroKids improved pediatric neurosurgery care in Myanmar?
This collaboration has been life-changing—for me, my team, and the children we care for. Some key improvements include:
–The partnership has strengthened our team dynamic, creating a culture of shared purpose, support, and celebration.
–The hands-on instruction in ETV and CPC gave me the skills and confidence to handle complex cases more effectively.
–Access to a fiber optic flexible neuroendoscope has revolutionized how we approach pediatric neurosurgery, improving precision and reducing recovery times.
–We’re seeing significantly better clinical outcomes. Children who once had limited hope now have a future.
What specific improvements have you seen in treating hydrocephalus and spina bifida?
-I now perform ETV and CPC with greater precision, leading to fewer complications and faster recoveries.
–Early diagnosis of hydrocephalus and spina bifida has become more common, allowing for timely intervention that improves long-term outcomes.
–With Ms. Thaw, we now offer holistic care—from diagnosis to surgery to post-op support—ensuring families are cared for every step of the way.
–We’re now able to reach and treat more children than ever before, expanding our impact throughout Myanmar.
Dr. Aung’s journey is a shining example of what’s possible when passion, skill, and partnership come together. Through his dedication and the ongoing collaboration with NeuroKids, children in Myanmar are receiving the specialized neurosurgical care they deserve—and getting a new chance at life.
